Ireland took on Scotland today in their second match of the Electric Ireland FIH Champions Challenge I which ended in an exciting 1-1 draw. There was plenty of drama in both halves with plenty of penalty corners including eight for Ireland, four in each half.
Ireland were quick out of the traps today when Anna O'Flanagan secured her sides first penalty corner in the 5th minute but Watkins effort was well saved, a minute later Ireland were back up around the D but O'Flynn's drag effort which went in was disallowed as it came in off Atcheler's chest. The match was an intense game and both keepers were kept on their toes throughout including Gray who was forced to keep Bell's chance out after Kidd set her up to take the lead. Ireland came under a period of pressure towards the end and a penalty corner on the hooter saw the Scots take the lead at half time when Catriona Ralph converted.
Ireland came out of the break in attacking mode with O'Flynn dragging in the 7th and Smyth with the rebound forcing Gibson in goals for Scotland to make a great save. Five minutes later Ireland were back on the attack when Small was set up by Crowley for a close range attempt but mis-controlled leading to a free out. Ireland eventually broke through in the 59th minute with a classy goal from Katie Mullan who in a tight space picked up to slam home on her reverse for an unstoppable shot making it 1-1. With the clock counting down in the final minute there was plenty of action - Captain Alex Speers was shown red as result of already accumulating a green and a yellow early in the match for what was deemed to be a diving tackle. Scotland were also awarded a penalty corner in the 70th minute which Gray saved expertly with her stick to ensure the match closed out one a piece.
Commenting after the match Denis Pritchard said "As is normal between our teams it was an intensely competitive game. I am pleased we managed to get something out of the game, we struggled for a ten minute spell late in the first half but after half time regrouped and created many chances and conceded few."
