About The Women's ESB Club Championships
The ESB Women's Club Championships is the climax of the women's domestic hockey season in Ireland and pits the top clubs in the 32 counties of Ireland against each other with the prize of All-Ireland Club Champions and European Club Championship qualification at stake.
The tournament is played following the conclusion of the branch leagues, from which the competing teams qualify. The teams who finish in the top three of the Ulster Premier League and Leinster Division One qualify, together with the top club from Munster's Division One. Connacht's Division One winners play off against the runner up in Munster's Division One to make up the eighth and final berth.
In the past, the eight clubs have been reduced to four through a two-legged quarter-final round, with the final four teams competing in a round-robin play-off over a long weekend to establish Ireland's top men's club team for that year.
From 2006, the tournament has been reformed, with the quarter-final round being removed, allowing qualification of all eight teams into the ESB Women's Club Championships Finals. The resultant eight-team tournament with two pools of four competing in round-robin format and the top two teams from each pool playing off in a semi final and final.
